Terrain mesh is the software that tells the simulator what height to place everything.  You can add it to your addon scenery to override the default settings.

 

If you use a mesh that is different to what the airfield designer used there will be some minor errors in height but not as bad as this glitch in FSX at airport MM17 (try it).

 

These are very popular and well recommended by many designers.
